Why Contractors Come to Gulfroot
Swietenia mahagoni is Florida native and listed as threatened — nursery-grown stock (not wild-collected) is the only legal source. This creates genuine supply scarcity: few nurseries propagate it at scale. At estate caliper (4–6in trunk, 25–35ft height), it is almost impossible to source locally. The old-world character — dense rounded canopy, minimal litter, fine-grained wood that glows in uplighting — makes it the correct choice for formal Mediterranean and classical estate settings where Royal Poinciana is too informal and Live Oak is too spreading.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10a–11 — frost sensitive; best for coastal SWFL. Florida native and FDACS-listed threatened species — all stock must be nursery-grown (verify provenance at order). Full sun. Moderate water; drought tolerant once established. Moderate salt tolerance — protected coastal settings. Dense canopy creates deep shade — excellent for summer pool terraces. Growth rate moderate, 1–2ft/year; patience required for canopy formation but the result is exceptional.
Direct from Homestead — not through a distributor.
