Why Contractors Come to Gulfroot
Cananga odorata at estate scale is almost entirely absent from SWFL retail and wholesale supply. The plant is known by architects and interior designers (its oil is the primary ingredient in Chanel No. 5 and Dior's J'adore) but rarely specified because local supply simply doesn't exist. Sanchez & Maddux, one of Palm Beach's most published landscape architecture firms, uses it specifically for estate evening entertaining settings — the fragrance at dusk is the point. This is a differentiation play for any designer wanting something memorable that competitors cannot source locally.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10b–11 — frost kills it; best for coastal Naples, Bonita Springs, and Marco Island sites. Inland Alva and eastern Lee County are marginal. Full sun. Moderate water. Fast-growing once established, reaching 40–60ft unpruned — but responds well to canopy training to maintain 15–20ft for residential scale. The intensely sweet, slightly spicy fragrance is strongest at dusk and dawn.
