Beaucarnea recurvata is not a true palm — it is a succulent tree from Mexico that stores water in its dramatically swollen trunk base. At estate scale, a large specimen with a 2–3ft trunk base and cascading strap leaves is one of the most striking architectural plants available anywhere. It grows almost imperceptibly slowly — large specimens represent decades of growth — which makes genuine estate-scale specimens rare and expensive. Retail sells seedlings. Gulfroot sources field-grown specimens from Homestead specialty growers who have maintained stock for years. No SWFL contractor currently has a trade-focused page for this species.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 9b–11. Full sun. Exceptionally drought tolerant — the swollen trunk base is a water storage organ; overwatering is a far greater risk than underwatering. High drought tolerance; moderate salt tolerance. Well-draining soil is essential — standing water or clay soils cause root rot rapidly. Extremely long-lived in SWFL coastal conditions. Full sun and excellent drainage give the best growth rate (still slow) and healthiest trunk development. Not frost-hardy below 25°F.
