Why Contractors Come to Gulfroot
Caryota mitis is the only clumping fishtail palm — it produces multiple trunks from the base rather than a single stem, creating a full, layered mass that single-trunk palms cannot replicate. The bipinnate fronds (divided twice, not once) are immediately distinctive and unlike anything else in the palm family. Landscape architects specify it by name for tropical botanical collections. No SWFL nursery or contractor website addresses specimen-scale Fishtail Palm sourcing for estate projects.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10–11. Full sun to part shade — one of the few palms that performs well in lower light conditions, useful for covered courtyards and atrium spaces. Moderate water needs. Moderate salt tolerance — inland and mid-coastal projects only. Fast-growing once established. Individual trunks die after flowering and fruiting (monocarpic per trunk), but since it is clumping the overall plant persists as new trunks replace old. Fruit is toxic — avoid planting near pools or areas where children or pets may contact fallen fruit. Not cold-hardy — coastal and southern SWFL only.
Direct from Homestead — not through a distributor.
