Phoenix reclinata is the African relative of the Canary Island and Sylvester Date Palms, but its defining characteristic is the multi-trunk clumping habit — individual trunks arch outward from the base, creating a fan-shaped silhouette that no single-trunk palm replicates. At 25–30ft with 8–12 trunks, a mature reclinata clump is one of the most architecturally dramatic plants in SWFL cultivation. No SWFL nursery or contractor website addresses specimen-scale reclinata sourcing. Clumps represent significant investment in growing time and are priced accordingly.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 9b–11. Full sun. High drought tolerance once established — shares the date palm family's desert-adapted water efficiency. Moderate salt tolerance — suitable for inland and mid-coastal projects; not recommended for beachfront. Produces small edible dates — not commercially significant but not a nuisance. Thorny frond bases — plan accordingly for pedestrian clearance in high-traffic areas. Moderate growth rate; clumps develop slowly, which is why field-grown material commands premium pricing. Broader cold hardiness than Phoenix dactylifera — suitable for zone 9b and above, including most of SWFL.
