Green Island Ficus at 45G+ trained standard or large globe form is almost never available locally. Standard retail supply tops out at 7G or 15G. Volume hedge runs at 25G — the size required for immediate hedge presence — require direct Homestead sourcing. Fernando Wong, the most published luxury Florida landscape designer, uses this species more than almost any other. When his projects are published in Architectural Digest or Veranda, the hedge material is typically Green Island.
SWFL Field Performance
Zone 10a–11. Full sun to part shade. Moderate salt tolerance — suitable for protected coastal settings but not direct salt spray. Low water once established. Whitefly resistant — critical differentiator vs. Ficus benjamina, which failed across SWFL. Dense branching responds well to formal shaping. Growth rate is moderate — contractor hedge installations at 25G give 3–4ft immediate height with dense fill.
