Dense, glossy hedge material with fragrant spring blooms — the fine-textured viburnum for tight spaces.
Southwest Florida
Growing Sandankwa Viburnum in SWFL
Viburnum suspensum is the compact, fine-textured member of the viburnum family: denser branching, smaller leaves, and a naturally tighter growth habit than Sweet Viburnum (V. odoratissimum). It tops out at 6–10ft untrimmed and holds a tight hedge well at 3–4ft — useful in spaces where Sweet Viburnum's 15ft potential is too much. Fragrant white-pink flower clusters appear in spring, followed by red berries that birds eat. Moderate drought tolerance once established. Slightly more cold-hardy than some SWFL hedges — handles Zone 8b conditions. Our stock comes in at 7G at 34" height — establishes quickly into a full hedge.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sweet Viburnum (V. odoratissimum) grows vigorously to 15ft+ and has larger, coarser leaves — it is the go-to privacy hedge for estate-scale applications. Sandankwa Viburnum (V. suspensum) stays more compact at 6–10ft with smaller, denser foliage — better for formal hedges, foundation plantings, and situations where you want viburnum's privacy-hedge character without the aggressive growth. Both are fragrant in spring.
Viburnum suspensum is generally considered deer-resistant — deer typically avoid the foliage. This makes it a practical choice for properties in Alva, Estero, and inland SWFL communities where deer pressure is a regular landscape concern.
Viburnum suspensum is not on the official Babcock Ranch approved plant list. For Babcock Ranch projects, Walter Viburnum (V. obovatum) is the approved native viburnum alternative. For standard SWFL estate properties without Babcock's native planting requirements, Sandankwa is an excellent hedge choice.
