Frequently Asked Questions
Both are single-trunk Phoenix palms with a formal, dramatic character. The Sylvester grows faster (2–3ft/year vs. 1–2ft/year) and costs less at equivalent sizes. The Canary Island Date Palm has a more massive trunk girth at maturity. Both are susceptible to TPPD — preventive care applies to both.
TPPD is a bacterial disease spread by a leafhopper insect that affects Phoenix species including Sylvester and Canary Island Date Palms. Symptoms include declining inner fronds and death within months. Annual preventive trunk injections with oxytetracycline (administered by a certified arborist) are strongly recommended for all Phoenix palms in SWFL.
