Southwest Florida
Growing Dwarf Ixora in SWFL
Ixora taiwanensis 'Dwarf Red' is a compact, mounding species that stays naturally at 18"–30" — fundamentally different from Ixora coccinea, which grows 4–6ft without shearing. The dwarf form is the better choice for formal border beds, pool coping edges, and low foundation plantings where standard ixora requires constant trimming to stay in bounds. It produces the same vivid orange-red flower clusters as its taller relative, blooming spring through fall in SWFL heat. Slightly more cold-sensitive than Ixora coccinea; protect from frost. Requires the same acidic soil and slow-release fertilizer as all ixoras.

Frequently Asked Questions
Regular Ixora (Ixora coccinea) grows 4–6ft in SWFL without regular shearing. Dwarf Ixora (Ixora taiwanensis 'Dwarf Red') is a different species that naturally stays at 18–30 inches. This makes Dwarf Ixora significantly lower-maintenance in border and edging applications — it holds its compact form without constant trimming. Both produce similar orange-red flower clusters.
Dwarf Ixora blooms spring through fall in SWFL, with heaviest flowering in late spring. The flower clusters are smaller than standard ixora but produced in proportion to the plant size. Light trimming after each bloom flush encourages a fresh round of growth and flowering.
Yes — at 18–30 inches mature height, Dwarf Ixora is one of the best low flowering border plants for SWFL formal landscapes. Mass planting 18 inches apart gives a continuous carpet of blooming foliage at pool coping edges, walkway borders, and formal bed edging. It is a better choice than standard ixora in these applications.
