Myrcianthes fragrans (Simpson's Stopper) is the native plant that landscape architects reach for when they want something beyond the standard cocoplum-and-viburnum palette. It has aromatic foliage, fragrant white flower clusters, orange-red fruit that attracts birds, and distinctive peeling cinnamon bark on mature specimens. It is one of the most beautiful Florida natives available — and one of the hardest to source in volume. Most SWFL nurseries stock it sporadically. SWFL Field Performance
Zone 9b–11. Full sun to part shade. Moderate drought tolerance. High salt tolerance. Florida native — counts toward native vegetation compliance. Dense branching makes it an effective screening shrub from 6–15ft. The cinnamon-colored peeling bark on mature plants is a design feature unique in the SWFL native palette. White flower clusters in spring and fall are lightly fragrant. Orange-red berries attract mockingbirds and warblers. Slower to establish than Wax Myrtle — plan lead times accordingly.
